Lead Software Developer – Drive a New Engineering Vision I’m working with a forward‑thinking organisation that is reshaping how it builds and delivers its technology. They’re undertaking a major shift: moving away from outsourced software development and establishing a modern internal engineering capability based out of Burnley. To support that transition, they’re appointing a Lead Software Developer who can set the technical direction and play a central role in defining how products are built in the future. This is a role for someone who enjoys being at the heart of architectural decisions, influencing technology strategy, and still getting stuck into hands‑on engineering. What makes this opportunity stand out • A chance to set the blueprint • Shape a new internal team • Bring critical knowledge in‑house • A focus on greenfield development projects What the role will involve • Setting the technical direction for application development on a modern Microsoft Azure‑based stack. • Establishing clear engineering standards across code quality, architecture, CI/CD and testing. • Working closely with an external development partner in the early stages before leading the transition of knowledge and delivery into the in‑house team. • Leading development of: • New digital products for customers and internal users • Self‑service tools that streamline onboarding and account management • A phased replacement of the existing core platform through an API‑first/Fabric integration approach • Providing high‑level mentorship to existing technical colleagues while taking ownership of design and build activity. • Working with stakeholders to shape requirements and translate business needs into scalable, maintainable solutions. • Helping the organisation unlock new data‑driven opportunities, particularly around telematics. Tech landscape Core skills that matter most: • C#, .NET, Azure • SQL Server or equivalent RDBMS • Cloud‑native and microservices‑oriented architecture • CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps) and automated testing • API‑led integration across internal and external systems Beneficial experience includes: • Kubernetes or Azure App Services • Modern front‑end frameworks • Integrating with ERP/CRM systems • Experience in data/analytics ecosystems such as Microsoft Fabric Who will thrive here • Someone who enjoys taking the technical lead but still wants to stay close to the code. • An engineer comfortable influencing architectural thinking without relying on a large supporting architecture team. • A pragmatic, solutions‑focused leader who can balance hands‑on delivery with guiding others and managing external partners. • Someone excited by building rather than maintaining — and motivated by seeing their decisions directly shape the organisation’s future technology stack. This role could be ideal for an experienced Lead Engineer ready for a broader strategic remit, or a strong Senior Engineer looking for their first true leadership step. Location, ways of working & package • Location: Burnley (hybrid working, typically 2 days a week in the office — flexibility where needed). • Travel: Occasional visits to other UK locations and a telematics site in Northern Ireland. • Salary: £60,000 – £70,000 + benefits, dependent on experience. If you’d like to explore a role where you can directly influence technical strategy, build a new engineering capability and deliver meaningful change, apply today and I’d be happy to share more about the organisation and the opportunity.
