Description

ABOUT NEUROMETERS Neurometers is a medtech spin-off of the Paris Brain Institute (ICM). The founders’ pioneering work, published in Nature Medicine, Brain, and other top-tier journals, has demonstrated that advanced EEG analysis combined with machine learning can reliably detect neural signatures of consciousness in comatose patients. Our mission is to bring this breakthrough research from the lab to the bedside. We are building a Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) that leverages EEG signal processing and machine learning algorithms to help clinicians predict the state of consciousness of patients in coma and disorders of consciousness (DoC), ultimately improving prognostic accuracy and guiding critical care decisions. We are currently transitioning from a validated research prototype to an industrialized, CE-marked medical device software. This is where you come in. THE MISSION Reporting directly to the CTO, you will play a central role in the industrialization and maturation of our research prototype into a robust, regulatory-compliant medical device. You will operate as a hands-on experimented engineer with strong ownership of the technical roadmap, working closely with the scientific co-founders and clinical partners. Your responsibilities will span the following areas: • Requirements Engineering: Formalize and structure software requirements from clinical needs, scientific specifications, and regulatory constraints (IEC 62304, MDR/FDA). Maintain traceability between requirements, design, implementation, and tests. • Architecture & Design: Audit and optimize the existing software architecture. Propose a scalable, maintainable, and secure design suitable for a medical device context, including clear separation of concerns, modular components, and well-defined interfaces. • Code Refactoring: Refactor the existing research codebase into production-grade, well-documented, and testable code. Ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices for SaMD development. • CI/CD & DevOps: Design and implement robust CI/CD pipelines. Set up automated build, test, and deployment workflows. Ensure reproducibility and traceability of software releases. • Automated Testing & V&V: Develop and maintain comprehensive test suites (unit, integration, system, regression). Implement a Verification & Validation (V&V) strategy compliant with IEC 62304 and relevant standards. • IEC 62304 Software Lifecycle: Help ensure the full software development lifecycle is conducted in compliance with IEC 62304 (software safety classification, risk management integration, configuration management, problem resolution). Contribute to documentation required for regulatory submissions. • Full Stack Development: Develop and maitain both backend (data processing pipeline, ML inference, API) and frontend (clinical user interface) development. REQUIRED PROFILE We are looking for an experienced SAMD freelance engineer (5+ years of experience) with the following qualifications: Must have: • Proven experience in the development of Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) or software in regulated environments (medical, pharma, aerospace) • Good knowledge of IEC 62304 software lifecycle standard and associated risk management processes (ISO 14971) • Full stack development skills: backend (Python Django, node.js) and frontend (React, Vue.js, or equivalent) • Solid experience with CI/CD tooling (GitLab CI) • Proficiency in automated testing strategies and frameworks • Good knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) • Experience with requirements engineering and traceability tools • Strong software architecture and design skills, ability to refactor complex codebases • Rigorous, autonomous, and comfortable working in a startup environment with high ownership • Fluent in English, professional French Valuable assets: • Basic knowledge in signal processing (EEG, biomedical signals) and/or machine learning • Experience with ISO 13485 quality management systems • Prior experience with CE marking / MDR / FDA regulatory pathways for software PRACTICAL INFORMATION Contract type : Freelance / Independent contractor Duration : Long-term mission (6–12 months, renewable with a perspective of internal hiring) Availability : Full-time Location : Remote-friendly, with occasional on-site meetings in Paris Start date : As soon as possible Rate : Competitive, commensurate with experience – to be discussed Reports to : CTO WHY JOIN NEUROMETERS • Work at the frontier of neuroscience and medical AI, on a product with direct clinical impact for patients in critical care • Collaborate with world-class researchers (Nature Medicine, Brain) and clinicians at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital and Paris Brain Institute • Shape the technical foundations of a product from prototype to market in a lean, mission-driven startup • High autonomy and ownership in a technically challenging, meaningful project • Contribute to a medical breakthrough: improving the diagnosis and prognosis of disorders of consciousness HOW TO APPLY Please send your CV, a brief cover note highlighting your relevant SaMD experience, and your availability / rate expectations to: neural@icm-institute.org We look forward to hearing from engineers who are passionate about building software that makes a real difference in patients’ lives.
